Full Course Details

An introduction to how this course will help you to perform bold and exciting transitions – transitions that cross genres, tempos and styles, and that help you to stand out from other DJs.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll discover the right mindset around your tunes, your DJing techniques, and your attitude to taking risks in your DJing
  • You’ll learn the basic skills you’ll be expected to bring to the table in order to make the most of this course
  • You’ll get a full demo of every single skill taught in the course, in the form of a continuous DJ mix that you can analyse
  • We’ve included foundation lessons – a “mini course” – to help you get started quickly on the advanced skills in this course

Track Preparation

When you want to mix quickly, creatively, and spontaneously, preparation is the absolute key to doing it successfully, and here we cover the steps you need to take.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll learn the importance of knowing and being able to set temporary cue points and permanent hot cues / cue loops
  • You’ll learn how to set your equipment up so your tracks will be automatically be ready for you the second you load them
  • We’ll show you how to move past even the best organised vinyl and CD DJs using tagging, so you can find what you want near instantly
  • You’ll learn about analysis and basic ID3 tags, mixing tags, contextual tags, non-musical tags and tagging elements in tracks

If you want to use advanced techniques like three or four decks, rhythm-linked FX, beat-tied samples and so on, beatgridding must be an essential part of your preparation.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll learn how beatgridding works, and how to fix common errors for faster, better sounding mixing
  • You’ll master “elastic beatgridding”, a powerful concept that lets you pull into shape tracks that have varied BPMs
  • “Tap” lets you manually fix incorrect BPMs that may otherwise cause you issues with sync mixing, FX and so on. You’ll master the concept and how to do it

Advanced Blending

Most of the top DJs whose sets are on Boiler Room and who play the big clubs rarely beatmix “straight”any more, relying on the advanced techniques here instead.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll learn our failsafe method for thinking about your tunes in terms of where you should and shouldn’t attempt to mix them
  • We’ll show you how many DJs never use keymixing, but still always perform great mixes, time after time
  • You’ll learn how to use your vertical faders and EQ controls to perform far better mixes than is possible with the crossfader
  • We’ll give you a cool little trick with the “gain” control that can buy you a few extra seconds when you’ve pushed a mix to the limits
  • You’ll discover how to use filters in place of your EQ for more creative mixing, and how to tie filters to your tracks’ BPMs
  • You’ll see how to mix into a new track and out of an old one using filters, and how to use your FX filters to filter multiple tracks

Live Remixing

For power mixers, it isn’t enough to move from track A top track B. Nowadays, it’s all about remixing your tracks live, to create something bigger and more exciting.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll learn how to using cues, filters, delay, loops and gating effects, to move your acapella use way past the ordinary
  • Using two copies of the same track, you’ll learn about the classic “phasing” effect beloved of vinyl DJs
  • Again using two copies, you’ll discover how to play one copy of a tune a beat or two behind the other to really get creative
  • One of the most creative uses of cue juggling is “tone play”, and you’ll learn how to use it to re-edit a melody as part of a mix
  • We’ll show you how to use cue juggling to play a completely new melody from an existing one, and how to use the “DJ trombone”

BPM Changes

For many DJs today, the holy grail of power mixing is being able to “mix anything into anything” – and that’s shorthand for big BPM, genre and style changes in a set.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll learn three ways to use post-fader delay or echo, in order to transition between any two BPMs, however different
  • You’ll see how to move between two different genres using varied BPM loops, with some tips for making such mixes sound tight
  • You’ll learn the double or half speed beatmix trick, that’s been used by DJs in the know ever since vinyl beatmixing

Genre Changes

Just because music happens to be in different genres, it doesn’t for a second mean you can’t beatmix those genres together. you just need to know how.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll learn how to use complementary key information in tracks from different genres to perform smooth mixes
  • We’ll show you how you can take advantage of remixes of the same track to perform often radical genre changes really simply
  • We’ll teach you to spot similarities between tracks in different genres, and apply all these skills to mix those tracks

Mixing Non-Electronic Music

One of the traits of truly great mixing DJs is that they’re not tied by sticking to stuff that’s naturally easy to mix, and instead can mix anything – and that includes non-electronic music.

What’s covered:

  1. You’ll learn how to take beatgridding to the extreme, in order to create live remixes of completely unmixable tracks
  2. You may want to play a track that has a varying BPM, but that you haven’t gridded. That’s where “riding the beats” will save you
  3. You’ll learn what manual looping is, why and when to use it, and see a power mix example that’d have been impossible without it

Mixing Pop Songs

Pop songs – often just two minutes of compressed (in more ways than one) music – present the biggest mixing challenge of all. Here’s how to do it.

What’s covered:

  • You’ll learn the “in, out” mix for playing something you need to play even though it is completely out of style for your event
  • We’ll show you how to extend intros and outros of tracks “on the fly”, to give you a bed of beats to mix into or out of
  • You’ll learn the legendary “one bar” mix, one of the biggest techniques right now, and how to use it right – loads of examples here
  • You’ll get a full deconstruction of one of the most famous mixes of the decade – and learn how to perform it
