Introducing the Numark Mixstream Pro (Transcript)

Let’s start off with the most obvious and important thing about the Mixstream Pro: the value you get for the money. This robust little DJ system from Numark is fully standalone, able to play from the typical USB/SD cards, or over WiFi with streaming services such as TIDAL, Beatport and Beatsource LINK, SoundCloud Go+ and Dropbox. It’s a well-built, 2-channel device with surprisingly heavy jog wheels, a lovely 7” touch screen, and fairly sturdy FX paddles.

But the Mixstream Pro’s most interesting party trick is surely its onboard speakers. While you certainly can’t DJ a full club or wedding with these speakers alone, they are sufficient for a small house or hotel party, or to use for personal monitoring. You can even control lighting from the unit, either using Philips Hue smart bulbs or proper DMX lighting over SoundSwitch.

And you get all of this for a mere $599.

All of this is made possible using the power of Engine OS, which we all know from the Denon DJ PRIME lineup. Engine, as a DJ-oriented operating system, has expanded beyond Denon DJ hardware into other InMusic brands. What this means is DJs can now gain access to one of the industry’s most robust pieces of software, for a much lower price of entry. Since all this hardware shares a common software core, it means that when Engine OS is updated with fixes and features… so is your unassuming little Numark.

Another reason the Mixstream Pro is worth a look is due to the general unavailability of the other standalones on the market: namely, the Pioneer XDJ and Denon PRIME systems. Like with many things in 2021, availability has been scarce. I think this can be an excellent alternative at an unbeatable price (as does the entire team at The DJ Hookup), so I wanted to make sure you knew it was an option to keep you gigging.

As I’ve mentioned, there are three ways to DJ on the Mixstream Pro. There’s what you might now call the “traditional” way… by using USB drive or SD card, ideally with a library you’ve prepared using the free Engine Desktop software.

If you pop into the Settings menu, you can connect it to a Wi-Fi connection and DJ using any of these streaming subscription services: TIDAL, Beatport LINK, Beatsource LINK, Soundcloud Go+. According to Numark… there are more services to come.

And then you can sorta meet in the middle, and access your personal DJ library over the cloud via DropBox account. This is actually pretty easy to set up. Just like any other Engine OS product, you select DropBox from the menu, it asks you to log in to DropBox from a computer or phone, you enter a numeric code… and you’re off to the races.

So, let’s talk about the built-in speakers. They do sound nice and clear, and no matter where you go, you have a built-in DJ monitor, which can be independently controlled. That is a pretty sweet feature, but it’s important to bear in mind that they will not fill a large room with sound. While testing it in the car on a quick road trip, it was sufficiently loud… but not louder than my stock car stereo. It’s excellent for a small gathering, house or hotel party… or for mixing on a live stream. Expect the kind of sound you’d get from a decent portable Bluetooth speaker. It’s important to note, however, that there is no dedicated booth output here… something that I’d consider a definite trade-off.

One thing I really like about the concept of onboard monitors is their use _outside_ of the DJ booth. If you’re like me, and you like to prepare tracks and playlists by checking what certain transitions would sound like, etc… the Mixstream Pro is a super convenient way to do this. It kinda makes me wish all DJ controllers had a set of speakers.

Or standalone DJ systems, I should say. You won’t find any mentions of Serato or any other performance software anywhere on the device, or in Numark’s promotional material. Interesting thing though, if you remember when we looked at the back of the unit… it has a USB-B port. Clearly this is meant for connecting it to a computer, and it even says so in the manual… but I’m honestly not sure why. Maybe a future update will include some sort of DJ controller functionality. Who knows, just speculating.

The final feature I want to discuss is lighting control. If you have Philips Hue bulbs, you can immediately start controlling them wirelessly with Engine’s lighting control… a great way to just jump right in to a simple lighting setup without the complications of something like DMX. Of course, if what you want are the complications of something like DMX… the Mixstream Pro supports that too! Using SoundSwitch, and an adapter like this, you can connect to a proper club lighting rig.

Key Takeaways

– Better feature set than XDJ-RX, a few years ago @ $1499

– Other standalone systems have been largely unavailable (excellent alternative)

– Not immune to supply/availability issues; better order soon to avoid getting stuck in backorder hell thru holidays

Who It’s Not For

– Those who need “TRULY” portable w/battery (PRIME Go)

– Those looking for DJ controller experience (at least for now)

– Those who need mobility (including mobile DJs)

Who It’s For

– Those who primarily want to use streaming/cloud music

– Those who like having small parties with 5 or 10 people

– Anyone who wants to ditch the laptop

– Anyone who likes a hands-on experience during library prep

– Denon PRIME users who want to easily take their Engine library on the go

– Any DJ who appreciates bang-for-buck

Your Turn.
